Moscow

Moscow, the capital of Russia is located on the river Moskva in the western region of Russia and the most populous federal subject of Russia. The real flavor of Moscow is situated in all the small nooks and crannies on every street. Russian contrasts are more present here than in any other city in Russia.

It is also the seventh largest city proper in the world, a mega city the population of Moscow (as of 1 January 2010) is 10,562,099.Historically, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union, Russian Empire (for three years in 1728–30), Tsardom of Russia and the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

Moscow is also well known as the site of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral, with its elegant onion domes. Moscow has a surprisingly number of no less than five airports, which are all situated about 30 to 40km from the city centre.

Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city’s other names were Petrograd and Leningrad.

It is Russia’s second largest city after Moscow with 4.6 million inhabitants and fourth in Europe after Istanbul, London and Moscow. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural centre, and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.

Saint Petersburg was considered to be “a key for paradise” for the Russian Empire, so the city’s name is very symbolic: it was called in honor of Saint Peter, who, as we know from the Holy Bible, was a keeper of the keys from the paradise. Saint Petersburg today is one of the most important cultural, scientific and industrial cities in Russia, housing several hundred of museums and exhibition halls.

Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is Russia’s third-largest city, after Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and the largest city of Siberia. It is the administrative center of Novosibirsk Oblast as well as of the Siberian Federal District.

The city is located in the south-western portion of the federal district and occupies an area of 477.2 square kilometers (184.2 sq mi)

Novosibirsk is the largest industrial, scientific, cultural and administrative center of Siberia. Novosibirsk was supposed to be a local trade center, but since the October Revolution it became the city of not only industrial, but also cultural and scientific importance.

Location: The city lies on the both banks of the Ob River, in the middle of Russia.

Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod, colloquially shortened as Nizhny, is the fourth largest city in Russia, ranking after Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk. Population: 1,311,252 (Russian Census (2002)) 1,438,133. Nizhny Novgorod, is situated about 250 miles east from Moscow

It is the economic and cultural center of the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region, and also the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and Volga Federal District. From 1932 to 1990, the city was known as Gorky after the writer Maxim Gorky who was born there.

The city is an important economic, transport and cultural center of the Russian Federation. The Nizhny Novgorod area and its surrounding town are respectively known for its metal production, machine building, agriculture, and nuclear research.

A great number of historical, architectural and cultural monuments have remained in the City. Although, there are visible changes, construction, renovation and restoration, Nizhny Novgorod is making a visible effort to rapidly catch up with the rest of the world and to write Russia’s future

Location: Located 400 km to the east from Moscow and is the third largest city in Russia.

Climate: The climate of the region is moderate and continental.

Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg formerly Sverdlovsk is a major city in the central part of Russia, the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast. Situated on the eastern side of the Ural mountain range, it is the main industrial and cultural center of the Urals Federal District.

Its population of 1,293,537 (2002 Census); which is down from 1,364,621 recorded in the 1989 Census, makes it Russia’s fifth largest city.

Nowadays Yekaterinburg is not only one of the biggest industrial centers in Russia but a very beautiful city with a lot of monuments of great historical and cultural value


Samara

Samara from 1935 to 1990 is one of the largest cities in Russia. It is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia, the Volga Federal District, at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers.

Samara is also the administrative center of Samara Oblast. Population: 1,157,880 (2002 Census); 1,254,460 (1989 Census).The metropolitan area of Samara-Tolyatti-Syzran within Samara Oblast constitutes the population of more than 3.0 million people.

Formerly a closed city, Samara is now a large and important social, political, economic, industrial and cultural center of European Russia, which in May 2007 played host to the European Union—Russia Summit.
